HISTORY OF ANIMAS
The idea for forming an Animation Society of Malaysia was first promoted and discussed at the Hiroshima Animation Film Festival in 1997. Three key players in the industry – Hisham Harun Hashim, Hassan Abd Muthalib and Kamn Ismail – met and agreed to form ANIMAS (Persatuan Animasi Malaysia – The Animation Society of Malaysia).

Hisham is the producer, executive producer and co-screenplay writer of Malaysia’s first animated feature film, Silat Legenda (Legendary Silat Warriors, 1998). Hassan is a pioneer in the animation industry and has written and directed the popular Sang Kancil (Mousedeer tales) of the 1980s and also directed Silat Legenda. Kamn was the originator and director of the first Malaysian animation TV series, Usop Sontorian (The Village Boy, Usop Sontorian, 1995).

In March 2001, The idea for forming an Animation Society of Malaysia was discussed again during a meeting with Hassan Abd Muthalib, James Ooi and Richard Ung Kok Kee at the office of James Ooi, No. 17, Jalan Nirwana 39, Taman Nirwana, 68000 Ampang, Selangor.

A series of meetings to form ANIMAS began in April 2001 and the 1st pro-tem committee met at Cempaka Sari Room, FINAS (the National Film Development Corporation), Ampang, Selangor at 9.30 am on 17th May 2001. Among the pro-tem committee were many notable players in the industry: Hassan Abd Muthalib (Freelance director/writer - President); Hisham Harun Hashim (Peninsula Digital – Vice-President 1); Jamil Ahmad (Fine Animation – Vice-President 2); James Ooi (Makmur Megah - Secretary); Khatijah Yusof (Fine Animation - Treasurer); Committee Members: Wong Pak Ting (TGVC); Stan Lee (Stan Design) ; Mohd Hezrey Shariff (Lecturer); Ali Sobree Bin Mustafa (Animation Director); CD Hamdan (Animator); Richard Ung Kok Kee (Animation Producer) and Mohd Kharizul Yaakup (Animator). Later Khatijah Yusof left Fine Animation and was replaced by Lyndon Yap who represented her in ANIMAS with Wong taking over the Treasurer’s portfolio.

ANIMAS was finally officially registered only on 29th May, 2007. However, even before registration, ANIMAS began to play an active role in the industry. Represented by Hassan Abd Muthalib and sometimes by James Ooi and Wong Pak Ting, ANIMAS was part of the main committee organizing the Malaysian Film Festival and many other events. Hassan was invited to Japan and China to present papers on the Malaysian animation industry a number of times. From the 11th to the 14 of December, 2004, a very successful seminar was organized with the collaboration of the French Embassy, Goethe-Insitut Malaysia and FINAS at Balai Senilukis Negara (National Art Gallery). This seminar - Animation Industry in Malaysia: Current Situation & New Challenges - brought together for the first time most of the animation companies and training institutions in Malaysia. Among the foreign speakers were Ms Tiziana Loschi, Director of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (France); Gilbert Hus, a producer and Regis Ghezalbash, a producer/director (both from France); Georges LaCroix, the director of the animation series, Insektors (France) and Ulrich Wegenast, an animation academic and director (Germany).

In 2008, ANIMAS collaborated with The One Academy of Communication Design in Sunway to present Animation Veteran awards to two pioneers of animation in Malaysia – Goh Meng Huat (the first animator in Malaysia who had been with Filem Negara Malaysia) and also to actor/director, Mat Sentol (the first feature film animator). The presentation was part of the Digital Art Competition & Convention held at Mid Valley Megamall. Hassan also gave a Powerpoint presentation of the history and development of the Malaysian animation industry during the event.
